T=0: The Decision
Melbourne architect, 8 years post-registration. AUD $98k salary. My partner and I had been trying to buy a house in Melbourne for 4 years — outbid consistently, saving while prices outpaced us. We had accepted we would rent indefinitely in the city we had both grown up in.
Median house price in Hobart was 48% of Melbourne in early 2022. My firm offered remote project management. My partner could work remotely. We bought a 1920s terrace in Battery Point for AUD $520k — a house that would be $1.1M in Brunswick.
Owning a home in a city I can actually afford. Continuing to practise architecture.

We are homeowners. That sentence still sounds remarkable. The nature access is staggering — kunanyi (Mount Wellington) is 30 minutes from our front door. The architecture scene is small and active — more interesting per capita than Melbourne's.
“Hobart's architecture community is smaller but warmer. Introduce yourself at the local AIA chapter immediately. Projects come through relationships in a city this size.”
